When in Korea Do what the Koreans Do!

This is brief post on certain things I've picked up so far in Korea.
  • Shoes off when entering a home/school, etc.
  • Bowing is Koreans way of saying "Hello".
  • Tipping is not expected. They will return what you give them.
  • The tempertaure in my school will always be below freezing in the hallways so wear warm clothes (my office is very warm though).
  • Kimchi is served with almost every meal.
  • Saying Hello to friends is different than saying Hello to elders or superiors (an-nyeong ha-sa-yo - superiors; an-nyeong - friends)
  • Childern in Korea are very hyper.
  • Pedestrians don't matter, so watch out!
  • Computer keyboards have english letters and Korean characters on them.
  • People are very friendly if you are friendly back to them.
  • People will always stare at the foreigner. It is a 24/7 occurence.
  • Beverages are always consumed after the meal.
  • Koreans have a day almost every month that is like Valentine's Day. Tomorrow is White Day, so that means that males give gifts to females. Next month it is Black Day, so they can only eat black food. It's actually really quite neat. February had a day as well where the females gave males gifts. I forget what the day is called. They also have a Day where you give roses and a Day where you give these cookie things on a stick that are apparently, quite good. All very very interesting.
  • They ID no one.
  • Running red lights is norm, especially with taxi's.
  • Horns honk on a regular basis.
  • The subway is so disgustingly jam packed that you pretty much become friends with stangers as you fall into them and accidentally grab them (sometimes inappropriately).
  • ABBA Mania: Koreans love Abba, especially "Dancing Queen".
  • Most toilets are squat, unless you are lucky enough to find normal ones.
  • They have FREE drinks nights at some bars in Seoul. Yes, I said Free!
  • No one waits in line for anything. Push and shove or you will get no where. It is ok, to be rude here...hahaha!
  • Recycling is insane here. They recycle absolutely everything and their are certain bags that are used. One for food and one for paper, plastic, cardboard, etc.
  • Absolutely, everyone here has a cell phone. Even elementary aged students and they use them at school.
  • Women wear high heels on a regular basis like they are going out of style.
  • Most of the younger generation women all have bangs.
  • Men spit on the street all the time and they make huge sounds while doing it. Like thanks, we know you have flem, so does everyone other human being.

Well Juria, I'm officially old. I even went to the liquor store today in hopes of egtting ID'ed. It almost happened because only one till was open and there was a really long line with this grandpa guy running the till (BTW- when I saw Grandpa, I mean a real Grandpa, not some 30 year old). Anyway, he was ID'ing everyone so I was like YES! Gettin' ID'ed on my 30th birthday. But then a girl opened the nest till and i could see Randy impatiently waiting in the car, so I switched tills. Unfortunately, this beoatch must have thought I looked over 25 becuase that's what age they say they'll ID. Hmmph! Well, that is my Rant. I ate asian- esque food twice today in hounour or you. Mongolian and Malaysian. Hope all is well and you aren't lonely yet. Bye! Luv me.

I do love you Brandy and sorry about the no Id'ing. You would hate Korea alone for that simple reason. They ID no one, so I'm pretty sure children could get into a bar...haha! I eat Asian food every damn day, except today I made bacon and eggs for breakfast, McDonalds for lunch...barf! had Outback for dinner. It was a very Western day for me. Anyways, I will try and keep having fun and learn to love kimchi.
Love, Julia.

I do get weekend off. This was my first weekend here and I went to Seoul with some girls and watch the St. Paddy's Day parade, wandered around and then went to a district to some bars.
I have no idea why you are the only one blogging with me. I guess everyone else comments on facebook or email. I like your way better.
