You know it is summer in Korea when you sweat getting out of the shower, when you have your a/c on full blast and when English camps start. I started my first summer English camp the last week of July at a different elementary school. This camp was 3 days, only for grade 5 students and there were many foreign and Korean teachers that came out to work it. Each foreign teacher was responsible for one subject and one lesson plan that we needed to teach seven different time, because there were seven classes. Unfortunately, since I was in Canada during the meeting for the camp I didn't get to choose the subject I would be teaching. I got stuck teaching 'Society.' I really struggled to come up with an idea for a lesson, because society is so broad and I had to cater it to grade 5's who first language is not English. Eventually, I came up with the idea to have the students work in groups and create their own societies.
The first 50 minutes of the lesson I explained different parts that make up a society, laws, religion, government, violence, marriage, etc. The second half of the lesson was spent creating their own society. I tried to have as much fun with them as I could because I felt my subject was boring.
Anyways, I got asked to MC the camp, which I didn't hesitate wanting to do because I love public speaking...most of the time. I was excited for the honor of being MC and I had a blast doing it.
Anyways, here are a few of the better pictures I took during the camp.
This was my homeroom class during the camp. I really grew to love them.
These boys were awesome, especially Scott, the boy in the black shirt.
These girls were adorable, even though Tina (the one in yellow) would not stop talking. BUT, at least she was being annoying in English.
This is my 'create-your-own-society' I made as a sample for the students. It showcases my obsession for Korean pop culture.
This is the society my homeroom boys made. It's named after me, because I'm awesome and I'm also the Queen (the drawing does look that much like me, but close enough).
These students from another homeroom were awesome, especially Charlie in the yellow shirt. He was incredible at English and we had some good conversations.
Just two girls in another homeroom trying to enjoy my society class.
This was one of my favorite created societies, mostly because I'm Queen again, but the drawing of me is much more accurate :)
Just some adorable girls in another one of my classes. I love the typical Korean poses used during pictures.
The last day of camp the students participated in a Golden Bell competition, which they always enjoy. My co-teacher Enee and I were the MC's and it was loads of fun. After the Golden Bell competition the students got to participate in a flea market where they could use their camp dollars earned over the three days and buy books, clothes, food, toys, etc.
Here are all the students that participated in the camp, ready for the Golden Bell competition.
These are my homeroom students who I loved and will miss.
Cian was the only male foreign teacher at the camp and during the flea market he was bombarded by students wanting to buy his products.
I was trying to sneak my way in to see what the book table had to offer, but there were so many students I was completely unsuccessful and almost lost my life...just kidding.
The snack table was pretty popular as well amongst the students.
Overall the camp was a lot more fun than I had anticipated. The foreign teachers were all fun to work with, the Korean co-teachers were fun and I think this contributed to the camp being a big success.
All of the teachers went for dinner after the camp ended at a delicious duck restaurant in old Song-do. There were so many different courses I was stuffed to the brim after about the third one, but the food was just to delicious to not try it all. SO, first summer English camp of the year = SUCCESS!!
