My What Big Eyes You Have!
Getting back to work on Tuesday was hard, but I got 9 hours of sleep on Monday night, so I think that helped. I spent all day with the grade 6's, which is awesome because I love the grade 6's. Jiny had me start the class off by picking certain students that had to stand up and answer questions I asked them. I need to just take a moment to tell you that because all their names are Korean they also go by numbers, so basically, I yell out a number and that student or number if you will has to stand up. I'm not sure how I feel about calling them a number because it makes me feel like they aren't human, but I could never pronounce all of their names. Anyways, they were all so scared and embarassed when their number got called because they are first of all, intimidated by me and second of all, they had no idea what I was going to ask them. So, I basically just asked easy questions, "How are you today?" How's the weather?" "What's your favorite color?" What's your favorite sport?" "What's your favorite season?" etc. They were all scared I was going to grade them or yell at them or ask them impossibly hard English questions. Each class ended with the game Memory. This really got all the students pumped up and ready to learn. It was boys against girls, which is always a riot. Well, the first girl who's number I called out starts playing the game and then all of a sudden she goes, "Teacher" (and starts pointing). I'm like, "Yes?" "You...You have BIG eyes." I'm start to smile and laugh a bit and was like, "I know, thanks." This was not the first time this has happened. When I was showing Jiny and Yong my photo album, they both commented on my BIG eyes. They really know how to state the obvious, but in Canada my eyes would not look abnormally big. I really like my eyes, so I will take when they tell me they are big, to be a compliment. I also asked Mary Anne on Sunday at noreabang about my eyes and she said that they were a little big. I guess I'm now known at school as the girl with big eyes. Great!
After school was over Jiny drove me home because the cable and internet guy was coming to hook me up. I was very excited. I have been waiting for this day for two weeks. It's funny how Jiny got me a bank card and cell phone without an Alien Registration Card, but not cable and internet. Anyways, he shows up right on time and starts to go about his business, but can't install it because he needed up on the roof and permission about something from the landlord, so I had to go yet another day without internet and cable. Since, he left early and I needed to go grocery shopping Jiny offered me a ride to the Lotte Mart in Yeonsu-dong. Of course I accepted and as soon as she parks her car she goes, "Dinner?" "What about dinner? I'm here to buy groceries to cook dinner." Jiny goes, "I buy you dinner?" I'm thinking, you really don't need to keep being so nice and buying me stuff, but she wouldn't let me refuse. We ate in the food court at the Lotte Mart for under 10,000 won and it was tasty. Jiny and I parted after dinner, so she could go home and I could shop. I bought loads of groceries and only spent 60,000 won. I had to take a cab home though because the bags were so heavy and I didn't want to break my back. Turns out I didn't even end up having to make dinner afterall, which was nice. Sorry, that this blog is lame and short, but I really thought it was funny when she randomly said that to me and she was so nervous and giddy when she told me.
